The University of Pretoria offers the unique TILA LLM Scholarship in International Trade and Investment Law, the first of its kind in Africa. This program, in partnership with the University of the Western Cape (UWC), Makerere University in Uganda, American University Washington College of Law in the USA, and the University of Amsterdam and Erasmus University in the Netherlands, aims to provide a higher education and training program focused on Africa.
The LLM in International Trade and Investment Law in Africa program was developed by the Centre for Human Rights, Faculty of Law at the University of Pretoria. Starting from 2017, the program will now commence in January instead of July, to incorporate the latest developments in international trade and investment law. These include emerging international norms and standards concerning business and human rights, as well as the growing awareness among businesses of their social and environmental responsibilities.
Scholarship Requirements:
- The scholarship is a one-year, full-time program with an interdisciplinary approach.
- It consists of two semesters: the first semester involves intensive custom-designed coursework, while the second semester requires the students to write a mini-dissertation.
- Applicants must possess outstanding academic credentials and demonstrate a keen interest in International Trade and Investment Law.
Scholarship Reward:
The LLM students will have the unique opportunity to interact with students and lecturers from other master’s programs within the Centre for Human Rights. This interaction aims to foster a better understanding of evolving international approaches to human rights, social responsibility, environmental obligations of businesses, and their implications for international lawyers.
Method of Application:
Please note that the LLM (International Trade and Investment Law in Africa) program will be held at the University of the Western Cape in 2024. Prospective students must apply directly to the University of the Western Cape for the 2024 intake. Applications for the 2025 intake at the University of Pretoria will open on April 1, 2024.
